STAY CHILLED

A recent project for a wine-lover in London saw us design and install a chilled wine wall.  As the client's contractor, I put together a number of images to show what can be achieved.

Here are a few considerations when planning your own:

  • Decide what your wine store is really for – simply storage, a display too, a tasting room, or an entertaining space?

  • Next consider how many bottles it is for.

  • Now find a suitable location in the house – appropriate for its purpose and size, away from direct sunlight and underfloor heating.

  • Take a view on how you would like the bottles to be displayed – ‘end on’ may be the most efficient but at the same time difficult to read the label.  A combination of the two can work well.

  • Reflect on whether you want to store anything else in there, such as cases of wine, chilled glasses or even air dried/cured meats.  Also whether you need any form of surface for storage or tastings.

  • Now comes the design – is this to be in keeping with the house or a chance to enter a more fantastical realm? The wall, floor and door finishes, the lighting, the style of the pegs and the layout of the wine display all come in to play here.

  • Last but not least the technical element – it is important to choose the right chiller unit for size, efficiency, noise and cost.  Cabling routes for the lighting and chiller should be concealed and the walls lined with a water vapour barrier.  Ventilation is key, as is the way in which the store is sealed.
